A couple of years ago, my family and friends were locked up in a Virtual World resembling the game Undertale. It’s a moment I don’t like to reflect on all that much due to a man in black killing my Father in cold blood, but there is one moment I still remember vividly. The moment where I slayed the Red Lantern Guardian in a battle with the Undying…

It had been a few hours since I had freed my friend: Greninja from the boss: Papyrus and now I was on my way to deal with the King of this world. Maybe this path I was currently on could also lead me to my missing friends as well. Susan, Fawn, Red… That last name was the hardest on me since that bastard was part of the reason I am part of his damn corps to begin with, him being the guardian of Rage and all. Granted, a lot of his power was taken by my father when the two encountered each other for the first time, but he’s still guardian of this fucking core…

I don’t know how much longer I can stand this. I have been trying for so long to quell this rage in my heart, and now with this ring, it’s even harder for me to control it. An abusive dad who didn’t care for me, abandons his family on his son’s birthday, said dad becomes a villain set on killing everyone on this planet, and now this man has kidnapped my friends and family and forcing me to fight to save them. All this anger, anxiety, frustration, most of it stems from him and what he has done not only to me, but those I care about…

While I was thinking about this, my pupils were turning red. But once I finished that thought, I let out a sigh and my eyes returned to normal. No, I refuse to let this rage loose!

So I kept walking, pushing that thought out of my mind as best as I could. Eventually I reached a bridge and I stumbled across a weird child-like creature. I reached out my hand in an attempt to talk to him, but the creature started to walk back, with a terrified look on its face. Confused, I walked closer to the creature, trying to reassure him it was okay. But then the creature tripped on a rock and fell off the bridge. I extended the hand with my ring and a beam of red light emerged, surrounding the creature in a dome for a moment before raising him up and placing it back on the bridge, dissipating the dome afterwards.

The creature smiled, thanking me for saving its life. But before I could utter a word, a familiar voice chimed in on the other end of the bridge. “Pathetic.” Just then, a Zoroark appeared on the other end of the bridge wearing Undyne’s armor, it was Red.

“Red, what gives? And what happened to Undyne?” I asked.

But Red didn’t care as he gave me a cold glare. “Killed her. Dumb bitch was going for you next, so I exploded her heart and took her shit. Now then, I gave you that ring so that you could kill the man who nearly killed me, not to save lives. So what gives?”

“Because I refuse to let innocent creatures die. You may have given me this power Red, but that doesn’t mean I will use it for strictly your goals.”

But Red just smirked at me for a moment before proceeding to extend his right hand towards the kid. “Fine then, time to teach you a lesson.” I knew what he was going to do; he was going to kill the kid. I couldn’t let that happen, so I extended my hand once again and shielded the creature from the attack. Red pulled his arm down in response and proceeded to grit his teeth. “I am the Guardian of the Red Lantern corps, and I can take away your power at will!”

But I just smirked as I raised the ring finger towards my face. “But this isn’t your ring, remember? My dad re-animated a toy ring of it, you didn’t create it. Someone seems to have forgotten the truth. That said, you are right. I am still a slave to your corp of rage, and I plan to fix that.”

The two of us glared at each other for a few moments as the child-like creature ran off in my direction. Once the dust cleared, Red snapped his fingers and the area around us morphed into nothing but a black void. “You really are like your father. You want my power for your own gain. Fine then, we’ll have a battle to the death. I will show you and anyone else who wishes to oppose my corps what happens when you disobey the Guardian of Rage!” His armor then morphed into Undyne the Undying’s armor and his eyes turned completely black as he let out a loud roar, his tongue embedded with the Red Lantern’s insignia.

This was going to be a hard battle for me, going up against a guardian and a boss on the Genocide Run of Undertale. But I had to push through; I had to save my friends and family.

Red started off by making my heart go green, with a shield now in front of me, and begun to throw a bunch of arrows at me. I was able to dodge the first set of attacks and then counter back with one of my weapons in the Inventory, taking off a chunk of his health.

Then the arrows started to get faster and faster as the battle raged on. While I was slowly starting to drain his health , I was beginning to take damage due to the speed of the attacks and my crappy reflexes. Then he spawned arrows of energy in the air and flung them at me even faster than before. Cuts were beginning to show up on my body, I was losing a lot of blood, and even my eyes were damaged by the attacks, severely damaging my vision.

But despite all this, I couldn’t give up. As the attacks kept on coming, I could still see Red in front of me, but then, I could see my friends and family appearing one by one in front of him, slowly removing him from the picture. As each one appeared, memories began to appear in my mind as I recalled each and every one of them. But then the last one appeared, it was Vincent Grimm. When he appeared, all of my friends and family dissipated and he readied a spear to throw at my head.
When I saw this, I couldn’t hold it in anymore. I let loose. My red ring glowed bright as I let out a loud scream, destroying the arrows around me and surprising Red. My body then began to glow red, shattering more arrows in the void. All I could feel in this moment was pure rage, rage towards Red, rage towards my situation, and rage towards Vincent.

My pupils glowed red, my hair turned a fiery yellow, and even black armor started to form around me. As my transformation finished, Red was stunned by this, giving me the chance to attack. My attack was filled with enough ferocity that it completely destroyed his left arm. He tried to attack with his spears once more as I dashed towards him, but this new form gave me increased speed, enough to dodge his attacks and cut off the other arm. With no arms left, I hit him with the strongest attack I could muster and slashed him across the chest, completely wiping out his remaining health and leaving a giant gash across his chest.

But after doing that, my Red Lantern ring ran out of power and I reverted back to normal, horrified over what I did. No! I didn’t mean to let loose this much rage! NO! NO! NO!

But as I said that, Red let out a sigh mixed in with a cough of blood. “It’s okay to be angry David. It’s a natural emotion you creatures have. Holding it in all the time will only make the anger much more explosive when released, as you saw for yourself. But unlike a deity, you can learn from your mistakes. You have seen for yourself what happens when you let your anger explode. Now you have a chance to use that power correctly. As punishment for losing the battle to the death, I give you all of my remaining power as a Red Lantern guardian. Use that to defeat your father and save your friends. If you claim to not be like your father, do what he couldn’t, and use that power for good.”

After that, his body faded away into dust and his red heart appeared in front of me for a moment before shattering and the remnants of the heart washing over me. My ring recharged to 100% and I could feel the energy rushing through my veins now.

I deserve this punishment. I let my anger consume me in that moment, now, I am stuck with this power… Forever.

Eventually, all of us escaped that world and Vincent Grimm was put to rest. Since that day, I no longer wear that Red Ring, I technically don’t need to anyways since his energy is now in my body.  For the longest time, I still had issues controlling the rage within my heart. I thought it would’ve been that way forever.

But a couple years later, I confronted that anger within me and prevailed over it, allowing me to use the Red Lantern powers in that transformation without losing control. As it turns out, Red’s death didn’t signal the end of the Red Lanterns, a few more did start showing up on this planet somehow.  But that’s a headache I will have to deal with another time.

So while I will still be stuck with these Red Lantern powers for the rest of my life, that doesn’t mean I can’t still live a normal life. Time will still continue to move forward, and I will do the same. When this incident with Vincent started, I wore a red ring of rage. Now that this incident has ended, the only ring I wear on my finger now is a gold one of bonds and the future.

So that concludes David Grimm’s story :P
Here's some supplemental material for The Mounty Presents. This is basically a story about David fighting the Red Lantern guardian and the consequences for it.
